Day50mm

omg. I FINISHED! Finally finished editing the photos I took with my 50mm on Feb 19 (the 50th day of the year) - and ended up with 50 (the goal) of photos that I deemed worthy of posting. Since I left my house for a lot of the pics, I'm counting it as my 8th photowalk, too.

Some of the pictures are just kinda "ok", but some are REALLY good, if I do say so myself. Without further ado, I present you with... Day50mm!

Photowalk 7

My seventh photowalk I got to do with dad in Connecticut. We went behind the gorge pool, and then to some other park.. Williams? Or something? Anyway, it was great. It was nice having someone with me (and dad held my camera bag for me when I was taking shots, which was great!), and it was nice spending time with just dad, even if it was a bit cold and icy. I took a lot of pictures, and only uploaded a few of my favorites, you can see them here.

I still haven't finished uploading all the photos from my trip, but you can see what I have so far in this slideshow. I'll let you know when the rest are up there.

Also, in other exiciting photography news, yesterday was the 50th day of the year, and I recently purchased the "nifty fifty" - a 50mm prime lens (which means it doesn't zoom in and out), so I took my camera with me all day and I (hopefully) got 50 keepers out of all those photos, and will have a slideshow soon to show you of 50 photos with the new 50mm lens!

Oh, I know you're all jealous of my nerdy photography life.

6th Photowalk

The weather has warmed up some, and all our snow has melted! Impressive, since we had well over a foot of it. Of course, this has also caused 1) the gutter to fall off my house and 2) some water seeping into the basement. But, these things happen.

So, today I went out on my 6th photowalk. I'm calling my weeks as Thursday-Wednesday, so today was the last day I had to squeeze one in for this week, so even though it was muddy and wet and cloudy, I had to go out! here's the results. I think i did pretty good with what I had. Oh, and it started raining about 5-10 minutes after I started, so I didn't have a lot of time to get good pictures. Anyway, I'm looking forward to doing my next photowalk in Connecticut! (the beans have been spilled - mom knows I'm coming, so I can say that here now)

I had my camera at work today (because I planned to go right from there to the park) and my manager saw it. Turns out he has the same camera, and actually knows how to use it, too! It was very nice to talk in CameraSpeak to someone at work and have them know what I was talking about, and so we compared lenses, technique and such and we talked about trading lenses so we could try them out (he's got a nice zoom lens, but no wide angle, and I've got the nice wide angle, and only a very cheap zoom lens - appropriate for each of us since he likes shooting sports, and I like nature & buildings). Anyway, nice to know that someone else at work that's interested in the same thing - and even nicer that it's my manager, as I think this was the longest conversation we've ever had and the only one when he actually looked like he wanted to talk to me and not just talking to me because he has to for work.

(Actually, not really our longest conversation ever, but longest with me as his employee - he actually did one of my interviews back in 1999!)

Recipe & Photowalk

I slacked off a bit this past weekend and didn't do a photowalk, but I plan on doing one at some point after work this week. The theme of the week in one of my groups on flickr is "favorite things" so I planned on taking a picture of some favorite thing of mine each day this week. So I want to go to my favorite place in Akron for a photowalk - the thing is, I can't decide where that is! Meanwhile, I don't think I ever posted pictures from the last place I went, The Gorge Metro Park. Dad might recognize this one, as I'm pretty sure I've gone there with him in the past. I don't think it looked quite like this, though! I took a lot of pictures, but only felt three were worth posting. It's ok, though, because those three might be my favorite three so far. Here they are.

This recipe was good, but it was a bit of an effort to make, so I'm not sure I'll ever do it again.

Pasta, Lentils, and Artichoke Hearts

1 cup dry red lentils (3 cups cooked) (you might be able to figure out from the picture that I couldn't find red lentils, so I used regular)
1 bay leaf
3 cups water
1 teaspoon olive oil
2 cups diced onions
2 large garlic cloves, pressed or minced
2 teaspoons ground cumin
1 teaspoon ground coriander
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
2 cups canned tomatoes (18-ounce can), chopped and liquid reserved
1.5 cups quartered artichoke hearts (9-ounce package frozen or 15-ounce can)
1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
1 pound farfalle, rotini, or spirali
salt and ground black pepper to taste

Bring the lentils, bay leaf and water to a boil in a saucepan. Lower the heat, cover and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes, until the lentils are tender

While the lentils cook, heat the olive oil in a separate pan. Add the onions and saute and cook for about 5 minutes, until golden. Add the garlic, cumin and coriander and cook for 2 minutes, stirring frequently. Add the lemon juice, tomatoes, artichoke hearts, and crushed red pepper and simmer on low heat for about 10 minutes. Drain the cooked lentils, reserving the cooking liquid, and add the lentils to the tomato and artichoke heart mixture. Simmer for 10 minutes more, adding about 1/2 cup of the reserved liquid if the sauce seems dry.

Meanwhile, bring a large pot of water to boil and cook the pasta until al dente. Drain the pasta and transfer it to a serving bowl. Top it with the lentil and artichoke heart sauce, add salt and pepper to taste, sprinkle with feta cheese, if desired, and serve immediately.

Book Recommendation

E - your christmas present comes with updates here as I read more books I think you'll like.

You may have guessed from my flickr stream, but: Digging to America by Anne Tyler. Really good.

Mom, you'd probably like it, too. I'll save it for the next time I see you and let you have it.

I'm really bummed, because I was really looking forward to the next book I had lined up (Love Walked In by Marisa de los Santos), and starting at page 55, it jumps back to page 1 and then starts again at page 114! So basically, 50 pages are missing. So now I have to return it. Grrrrr.
